The Pinterest Board Came to Life: 5 days Days in Rio de Janeiro 🇧🇷

I loved every single bit of Rio de Janeiro!

To be honest, it rained EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

And trust me, I checked the weather before this trip. Multiple times. Rain was definitely not part of the plan, but somehow it made the entire experience feel even more magical. The clouds surrounding Christ the Redeemer? Unreal.

From standing beneath one of the Seven Wonders of the World, to spending a day out on the water, to exploring the Tijuca Forest, to experiencing Rio’s nightlife, it honestly felt like we were living inside a Pinterest board.

This trip was planned for 11 people to celebrate my husband’s birthday, which honestly deserves an award in itself because getting 11 adults to commit to a trip is no small feat.

So if you’re currently sitting in a group chat that’s been talking about a trip for months, consider this your sign. Book the flight. Request the PTO. Make the trip happen.

What I loved most about Rio is that it truly works for every type of traveler. A girls trip? Absolutely. A couples trip? Of course. A guys trip? Definitely. A solo trip to satisfy your wanderlust? Rio checks every box.

May is considered shoulder season in Brazil and honestly, I think we accidentally cracked the code. While the weather wasn’t exactly what we expected, we got to experience so many iconic places without the overwhelming crowds.

Let’s Talk About Safety

Before this trip, I spent HOURS researching Rio de Janeiro. And if you’ve ever looked up Rio travel tips online, then you already know what comes up over and over again: be careful with your phone, don’t wear flashy jewelry, stay aware of your surroundings, don’t leave valuables unattended… the list goes on.

To be completely honest, all of that research made us a little paranoid before arriving.

Then when we landed in Rio, several of our Uber drivers gave us the same advice, which definitely reinforced those concerns. For the first day or two, we were clutching our bags, constantly checking that we had our phones, and looking over our shoulders more than usual.

But after settling in and actually experiencing the city, we realized something important.

Yes, it’s important to be vigilant. Yes, you should use common sense. But it wasn’t nearly as scary as some people online made it seem.

Now, I do want to add a disclaimer: we visited during shoulder season and it rained every day, so that may have contributed to our experience. The city felt less crowded than I expected, and many of the major attractions were surprisingly manageable.

Our group explored the city, visited the major attractions, used Uber frequently, and spent time in tourist areas without any issues. We stayed aware of our surroundings, avoided flashing valuables, and followed the same precautions we would take in any major city.

Traveling with a Large Group? Read This.

If you’re traveling with a large group, my biggest piece of advice is to book private transportation whenever possible.

One thing we quickly learned is that Uber in Rio is INCREDIBLY affordable. We’re talking rides that can be close to an hour long for around $7 USD. As someone from Miami, that felt almost unbelievable.

The challenge? Most Ubers are smaller economy vehicles. When you’re traveling with a group of 8, 10, or in our case 11 people, that means constantly splitting up into multiple cars, coordinating arrival times, and making sure nobody gets left behind.

For shorter trips around the city, Uber worked perfectly. But for airport transfers, major attractions, and planned excursions, having private transportation made the experience so much smoother.

I’ve included the tour company we used throughout this itinerary for airport transportation and several of our excursions. They were absolutely phenomenal from start to finish, responsive, professional, punctual, and incredibly accommodating to our group. I genuinely cannot recommend them enough. 10/10.

Trust me, when you’re coordinating a large group in a city you’ve never visited before, the convenience alone is worth it.

So if Rio has been sitting on one of your Pinterest boards for years like it was on mine, let this be the push you need. Below is the exact itinerary we followed filled with iconic landmarks, beach time, nature, nightlife, and all the magic that made me fall in love with Rio de Janeiro.
